Cleaning CD and CDR audio files with the EZ Impulse Noise Filter
Ok - that is consistent with other reports. The actual recording surface dye layer is on the top surface of the disc, not on the optical side. So, chemical or mechanical effects on the non-optical side can cause problems similar to what you are seeing. At least, you are able to recover from the problem, which is great news.
