To put that in perspective, Billy Holiday had around a 1.5 octave range. As another point of reference, Aretha Franklin, (the Queen of Soul, may she rip), had almost a 4 octave range from G2 to E6.

I agree - the tonal quality of a voice and the technique are probably more important than mere vocal range.

Someone who I think had good tonal quality and word annunciation was Frank Sinatra with only a 2.5 Octave range, which goes to your point, Marc.
