  • Storage of Reel to Reel Tapes

Here is the recommended way to store reel to reel tapes:

    1. In their original boxes
    2. Vertically (not horizontally)
    3. Around 60 degrees F at a relatively constant temperature and humidity
    4. Tails Out (minimizes the effect of print-through)

Note: Of course, you must re-wind the tape before playing/transferring it. You should also de-gauss the tape heads and tape guides and clean them with ethyl alcohol using cotton swabs before playing an old archived tape. (Note: 95% {190 Proof) Grain Ethyl Alcohol can be used to clean the heads. It can be purchased at most liquor stores under the brand name Everclear, However,It is illegal to sell in thefollowing states: California, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Washington, West Virginia, and Virginia).
