  • Minimizing Stretch & Squish (Time Compression) Distortion

Today, a customer called asking how to minimize the distortion introduced by the Diamond Cut Stretch & Squish (Time Expansion or Compression) routine. He needed to slow down a piece by 9 % while keeping the pitch constant.

He was trying to adjust the Size and Overlap controls (which are interactive) for minimum distortion after setting the Time Compression to the value that he desired.

I told him to start with a preset that is close to the desired value, which was "10 % Slower". Then, I told him to reduce the Time Compression control to 1.09 (slower) which is quite close to the preset value.

The distortion was minimal when he used that technique. So, the moral of the story is to always use a preset close to the desired value and then tweek it. That method will result in the minimum amount of introduced distortion because it will also bring up appropriate values for the Size and Overlap controls.
