  • Reverse ALC

I have a cassette recording made in the1974 with a mono recorder using ALC. Most of the time, it's fine, but when things get very quiet, the levels come up, and, since this was a pretty inexpensive recorder, associated noise increases.

Is there a way to reverse this action, or is the easiest way to deal with it just to eliminate the noise with the CNF?
It's a mix of hiss and motor/mechanical noise.

    Hi,

Well, if it is a true ALC (like the Diamond Cut ALC found in the Dynamics Processor), it would be hard to completely reverse. I recommend using the CNF (per your suggestion) or two instances of the the Punch and Crunch Effect - - - one operating in Expander mode and the other in Compression mode. It will take a lot of experimentation to get it to track the original signal properly, however.
