    Is the signal level from a phonograph strong enough to be directly input to a standard soundcard.I am using a Hoontech soundcard which does not have inputs specifically for phono.

    Dave,
    No the signal level from a phono cartridge is too low to drive a line level input. You need a phono preamplifier. The preamp does two things, one is to amplify the signal to the proper level, and it also provide the proper RIAA equalization needed to restore the proper frequency response.

      Rick,
      I got a very simple 9volt powered stereo preamp at Radio Shack last year for about $29.00 and I works just as advertised.
